The real risk is water, not looks
A moss-covered roof loses more than its appearance: moss holds moisture against the tile, lifts the overlaps and speeds up the freeze-thaw cycle that cracks clay. Around Lake Geneva, where winters alternate rain and night frosts, that cycle works on the covering season after season.
Gutters matter at least as much. A gutter loaded with needles, leaves and grit overflows during summer storms and the water spreads across the façade or into the roof space. Many leaks blamed on the roof actually come from a gutter nobody has emptied in three years.
Cleaning without damaging the covering
A roof is not cleaned like a terrace. High pressure aimed under the overlaps pushes water where it must not go and can shift tiles; on old porous clay it strips the surface layer and makes future fouling faster. We match the method to the covering and always work with the direction of flow.
We are not roofers and we do not claim to be. If we find a cracked tile, lifted flashing or a holed gutter, we document it with photos and report it so you can bring in a roofer. Cleaning over a defect does not make it go away.
Our approach
Safety first
Access, anchor points and protection of walkways are settled before anyone goes up.
Method matched to the tile
Old clay, concrete tile, slate and steel sheet call for different pressure and different products.
Gutters and downpipes included
Emptying, rinsing and flow checks — the most useful part of the job.
Long-lasting moss treatment
Applied after drying, not onto a streaming surface, so it slows recolonisation.
Photo report
Before/after condition and a note of anything that belongs to a roofer, without doing it ourselves.
Surroundings protected
Downpipes plugged so debris does not enter the drains; floors and planting protected.

Roof cleaning — frequently asked questions
Do you use high pressure on tiles?
Not as a rule, and never under the overlaps. A lance aimed against the flow pushes water beneath the tile and can shift it; on old clay it strips the surface layer and the roof fouls faster afterwards. We choose the method according to the covering and always work with the direction of flow.
How often should gutters be emptied?
Once a year is enough in most cases; twice if the building is surrounded by conifers or large deciduous trees. The right moment is late autumn, once leaf fall is over but before the first frosts.
Do you repair broken tiles?
No, and we do not pretend to. We are a cleaning company, not a roofing company. What we find — a cracked tile, lifted flashing, a holed gutter — is photographed and reported so you can instruct a roofer. Cleaning over a defect does not fix it.
Is the moss treatment harmful to the garden?
We plug the downpipes during the work so residue does not enter the drains, and we protect planting at the foot of the building. The product is applied to a dry surface in controlled quantity, not flushed off afterwards.
Can you work in winter?
Mechanical removal and gutter clearing remain possible outside frost and snow periods. The long-lasting treatment, however, needs a dry surface and a minimum temperature: we postpone it rather than apply it in poor conditions.
How long before the moss comes back?
It depends on orientation and immediate surroundings. An open, sunny roof can stay clean for years; a north-facing roof under trees greens over much faster. The treatment slows the process, it does not stop it for good.
