The green film returning every spring is not inevitable

Around Lake Geneva, mild damp winters are ideal for moss and algae. They settle first in the joints and micro-roughness, then colonise the whole surface. The problem is not only visual: paving covered in algae becomes slippery, and a slippery restaurant terrace is an accident risk for your customers.

We always separate two stages: removing what is there, then slowing its return. A plain pressure wash cleans but leaves spores in the joints; the green comes back within a season. A long-lasting treatment applied after drying changes the durability of the result significantly.

Pressure is not the same on every surface

Sound concrete paving takes high pressure. Exotic hardwood, composite, porcelain stoneware or soft natural stone do not. A badly set lance on a timber deck board tears the fibres: the surface becomes rough, gets dirty faster afterwards and cannot be recovered without sanding.

We match pressure, nozzle and distance to the substrate, and we test in a corner before treating the whole area. On timber we work along the grain, more slowly. It is less spectacular to watch, but it is what preserves the terrace.

What's included

Our approach

Pressure calibrated per substrate

Paving, timber, composite, stoneware and natural stone need different nozzles and distances.

Long-lasting moss treatment

Applied after drying to slow recolonisation, not simply rinsed off.

Joints and edges included

Green growth always starts in the joints; treating them changes how long the result lasts.

Slip safety

Priority on circulation areas and customer access in public premises.

Water management

Controlled run-off, drains protected, furniture and planting moved or covered.

Out-of-service timing

Before a restaurant opens or outside office hours, so operations are not interrupted.

Terrace cleaning — frequently asked questions

Terrace cleaning — frequently asked questions

Can pressure washing damage my timber terrace?

Yes, and it is the most common mistake. A lance that is too powerful or held too close tears the wood fibres: the board becomes fuzzy, gets dirty faster afterwards and can only be recovered by sanding. On timber we lower the pressure, widen the nozzle and work along the grain. The result is less immediate but the terrace stays intact.

How long before the moss comes back?

Without a long-lasting treatment, often a single season — especially on a shaded or north-facing terrace. With treatment applied to a dry surface you usually gain several seasons. Exposure and the immediate surroundings (trees, standing damp) matter more than the product used.

Do you charge hourly or as a package?

Both are possible. For a one-off visit we apply the published hourly rate, the same as for our other pressure-washing work. For a large surface or a seasonal contract a package is clearer: we price it after seeing the terrace.

Do I need to clear the terrace beforehand?

No, we handle it: furniture, planters and parasols are moved and put back. If items are fragile or very heavy we discuss it at the quotation stage so it is planned rather than improvised on the day.

Do you also clean railings and glazing?

Yes, and it is the right moment: the team and equipment are already there. Cleaning a glass railing after the terrace avoids seeing dried splashes on the glass a week later.

Can you work in winter?

Mechanical cleaning remains possible outside frost periods. The long-lasting treatment, however, needs a dry surface and a minimum temperature: applying it to cold, damp paving simply wastes it. In that case we clean and return for the treatment in spring.

A terrace to restore?

Give us the surface area and substrate type; we propose a slot before the season opens.
